With windows that straddle the ground and are largely obscured, homeowners often worry about basement window security. Thieves see basements windows as a quick way to get into a home without being seen.

Often the basements windows are located in the back of a home in an obscure place. If a thief is breaking into your home in the night, often the ground floor window is a perfect place to enter because lighting is usually poor around the window.

Homeowners have several low cost options for increasing basement window security and protecting their families and belongings.

1. Window security bars. Many homeowners scoff at the notion of putting window security bars on their windows, but since most basement windows are not easily visible, the bars should have little effect on the aesthetics of your home. This security measure will improve security by literally “barring” the thief from your home!

2. Don’t allow shrubs and other vegetation to grow around the basement windows. This is the simplest thing you can do to improve security at ground level. Thieves don’t want to be seen. If you have a large bush growing near your cellar windows, you are giving them a natural place to hide while they break into your home.

3. Security lights. You don’t have to add a light that burns all night to increase security measures. You can add a motion sensor that triggers the light whenever someone approaches the basement window. Keep in mind small animals and wind can also trigger the motion sensor.

4. An alarm system. An alarm system will not only improve security, but it will protect your entire home. You can find relatively inexpensive alarm systems and in some cases, you can install them yourself. You will pay a monthly monitoring fee.

5. A window sticker that indicates your home has an alarm system will deter some thieves and increase security for the basement. If a thief thinks an alarm system is going to sound if they try to enter, they will choose another property.

When you bought your home, you loved the fact that it had a basement. You may use it as an apartment or game room for your family. You may still be trying to decide how to finish the space. No matter what the use, you want great basement window security to make sure thieves cannot get your belongings or worse, get in and hurt you or your family.
