Home security companies have many driveway alarm systems to fit your needs. Most of these are attached to a wireless or battery operated radio that alerts you when someone is approaching.
• If you are only concerned about strange vehicles, you can bury a metal detector on your driveway. These detectors have proven to be very reliable. Even though they cost more, they can’t detect people or animals.
• Another way to find out if an unwanted vehicle is approaching your property is with a hose. These rubber air hoses have become popular because they don’t alarm you if an animal crosses or if a person is near (which can be a disadvantage if that person is a thief!). But these hoses won’t last forever and need to be replaced often.
• An infrared sensor will alert you if a person is on your driveway. These low cost sensors can be purchased for less than $50 and in some cases for as little as $20. You can put these driveway alert systems as far away as five feet from the driveway. This keeps thieves and trespassers from knowing they are being detected. Unfortunately, if you have a problem with animals near your home, the infrared sensor will also go off if an animal approaches.
• You can install cameras along your driveway. You can purchase a system that allows you to view your driveway on your computer monitor. These systems are very popular with homeowners who have a gate at the beginning of their driveway. Before the gate is opened, the homeowner can see who is trying to visit their home.
When deciding on a security measure for the driveway, you need to consider the exterior of your home. Do you live on a hill in a cold climate? A rubber hose does not work well in ice and snow. In rugged terrain, the hose wears out quickly. Do you really want to dig up your property to install a metallic probe? Do you have a place to install cameras along your driveway? |
