Home Security Tip

Diligence when it comes to protecting your family is the one home security tip law enforcement personnel wishes more people would hear. So many times families take their security for granted until the unthinkable happens.

No one wants to be the victim of a burglary or worse yet, a violent home invasion. Yet most people don’t take the time and make the effort to protect their homes.

There is a home security tip for every aspect of protecting your family. If you are willing to be diligent and take the time, here is the best home security advice in each area:

• Outdoor lighting - Put the lights on a motion sensor. The home may look dark when an intruder approaches but when the sensor is activated, the thief is in the light. This also saves you money because your security lights will not be on throughout the night.

• Indoor lighting - Purchase a sensor for your lights. These sensors can turn the lights on, even when you are not at home. This will make burglars think you are home even when you are not. Most thieves don’t want you there to oversee their crime.

• Cameras - If your budget for home security is low, purchase a dummy camera. Many of these cameras are less than $20. Some of them come with a motion detector that makes them look even more realistic. The thieves will not know if the camera is fake or real!

• Backyard - Keep your hedges and bushes trimmed. If at all possible, don’t put any large bushes near the windows of your home. Intruders can easily hide behind one of these bushes while opening your window.

• Signs - Even if you don’t have an alarm system, a potential thief does not know that. You can purchase a home security sticker for as little as $1. Put these stickers at every entrance to your home. You can also get a yard sign that matches.

• The “duh” home security tip - Lock your doors and windows! Most burglaries are crimes of opportunity. If you make it easy for an intruder to get in—they will! Even if you are just running down to the store for a few minutes, lock your doors. You don’t want to come home and find someone going through your valuables.
