Nanny Cams

In March 2006 a Florida judge dismissed the case against Claudia Muro who police said had been seen in a nanny cam shaking a five month old child.

The judge said the video was time lapsed and may not have accurately portrayed how hard Muro was holding the child or if she was shaking her.

Many parents have purchased nanny cams to monitor their children and their nanny while they are away. But as in the Muro case, parents may notice the video is not good and unless you want to purchase a very expensive device, it may not be in “real time.” Parents need to research the products and make sure they have one that works for them before purchasing spy camera.

Still, installing a nanny cam in your home has many advantages for parents including:

• You can hide the covert camera almost anywhere. Teddy bears are a popular place, since the cameras are often small. You can also place the camera in plants or install them in the nook or cranny or your child’s nursery.

• Many mini cameras are equipped with WIFI. This allows you to watch your nanny and child from any computer or even a cell phone. The disadvantage is unless the camera is recording in real time, you may see your child being abused but because of the time lapse you may not get there in time.

• You will have peace of mind. Once you see on the nannycam that your child’s caretaker is attentive and responsible, you will worry less.

• You can find hidden surveillance cameras at most retailers and they are not as expensive as you think. While some mini cameras can cost over $1,000 if you add extras, you can find one for a little as $100. These cameras may not be called “nanny cams” but a home security specialist can show you what you need. These cameras are often easy to install if you don’t want to add WIFI to the camera.

Many people wonder if covert cameras are legal. Every state allows you to video tape in your own home without telling the person who is being taped. It does not matter if the camera is hidden or is in plain view. The legality of nanny cams is being questioned, particularly by nannies that have been captured on tape and fired.
