Here’s a very alarming statistic: in a recent study conducted by CNN, it was revealed that 17% of babysitters/nannies abuse the children under their care. Such abuse may range from slight physical violence, to grave physical beatings, to emotional disruptions, to sexual and/or lascivious acts.
What makes matters worse is that different states have different laws regarding the agencies that select these nannies. Some states are strict about the selection process, given the fragility of the subjects that will ultimately be involved; hence they require background checks to be conducted on applicants for the position. Other states, however, are more loose when it comes to the matter.
17% may not be a big percentage in other matters, but when our children are involved, 17% is a real cause for concern.
Clearly, something must be done to ensure the safety of our children when in the care of the babysitter or nannies we hired.
